Tales of a Lazy Housewife Part #1

Okay, I have a confession to make. I suck at being a housewife.

No seriously, I suck at it. In the spirit of transparency, the photo above is of the current state of my living room. Yeah, I know. It’s bad.

Right before I took this photo, I removed the baby gate divider in a fit of rage and tears because I’m tired of fighting with it and it only enables my laziness. I originally put it up to keep Evie away from my desk, sewing stuff, books, the wood stove, etc. However, in the many months that it’s been there, I’ve treated “my” side of the gate like a closet–anything and everything gets dumped there.

And this is just the living room. Let’s not talk about the kitchen, hubby’s office, the bathroom, or the porch. Yeah….let’s just…let’s not go there.

At least once a week I have a mini-meltdown because I feel like I just can’t keep this house clean. Evie gets into everything, so it’s hard to keep things organized. And this house has absolutely zero closets, so things pile up way too easily.

Fortunately, the only pressure on me to try to keep a clean house is myself and how society views me as a housewife. Unfortunately, that’s a lot of damn pressure.

So what do I do with that pressure? Crumble under it? No. That would be the easy option. I know I’m not the only mom who feels this way, and we need to give ourselves a little break. We’re only human, and we’re only one person.

But on the flip side of that, no one is going to come and wave a magic wand and make it all disappear. And while hiring a maid to clean and organize is an option for some people, it isn’t for me. So I need to take the initiative to make my home more livable for the people who live here, and I invite anyone reading this to take the journey with me.

After today, every week I will post an update about the progress I’m making to de-clutter and organize my home for me and my family. And I will be starting with this nightmare of a living room.

Tell me about your plans to clean and organize your home. What’s your biggest problem area and what’s your plan of attack? Let me know in the comments! And if anyone has any tips or tricks that can help, feel free to share that as well!
